Practical information

About the region

It is sometimes said that the Hinterland of Bruges is the backyard of the seaside and the frontyard of Bruges, in other words, the ideal combination!

The region can be divided in three splendid landscapes that all have lots to offer!

The Polders

North of Bruges, the landscape with seawalls, canals, ditches and ponds gives you superb views. The region of the Zwin is a paradise for ornithologists and it is great to enjoy nature along the Damme canal. The polders are dotted with picturesque villages and you will find the villages of Gistel and Oudenburg at the end.

The green outskirts of Bruges

In the south you will find the most woody region of West Flanders. Use the network of walking paths of Bulskampveld or follow the Bruges-Ghent canal on your bike. Besides nature, the region has elegant castles like that of Loppem and Wijnendale, with magnificent gardens.

The region of Tielt

Between Bruges and Ghent you will discover the rural charms of the fields and prairies in Tielt. The visitors’ centre in the fabulous Mulle de Terschueren house is the ideal starting point to discover the city and its surroundings.
